Things to see & do in South Tyneside

Moving to a new area can have it’s challenges, but don’t worry there’s no shortage of things to do in the region whether it be family days out or a relaxing day by yourself. The area is steeped in industrial herritage but also has strong cultural roots, a few of our favourites include Soughter lighthouse, The Customs House, The Dunes, Haven point, Jarrow Hall and many more.

Family Activities

You can expect to have many days out to consider when moving to the South Tyneside area with the Family. There’s plenty to do including a trip along to Ocean Beach Pleasure Park, England’s only seaside Funfair, with the usuals attractions such as spinny cups, mini rollercoasters, waltzers, 2p pushers, hook a duck and more, high and low thrill rides for all ages. If the funfair isn’t your sort of thing there are also plenty of museums such as Jarrow Hall an Anglo saxon inspired farm and village or South Shields museum based in the heart of South Shields. ‘The Dunes’ is also situated in South Shields along the seafront with activities for all ages with an adventure island, bowling and more. Miniature golf courses are great for all ages south Tyneside has the pirate themed Smugglers cove based on the South Shields sea front and for the swimmers in the family there’s Haven point which leasure pool which hosts waterslides for the kids as well as excellent gym and leisure facilities.

Walks and exploring in the area

Souter lighthouse, probably the most famous landmark in the South Tyneside area when moving to South Tyneside I’d say this is a must visit place. The famous landmark is the world’s first lighthouse built and powered by electricity. You can climb right the way to the top, visit the cafe and visitor shop, play in the field and hire a bike for free to explore this beautiful area of coastline.

The historic Arbeia Roman Fort Is the most Easterly part of hadrians Wall and was built in AD160 you can scale parts of the Fort and have a tour around and it’s proximity to many of the local attractions means it can be a welcome break from the popular coastline activities. ‘Love exploring’ it’s the app that allows you to discover games and trials in the South Tyneside area.
